KKN Gurugram Desk | India has expressed concerns over the deportation of 487 presumed Indian nationals from the United States, stating that some of them are facing “final removal orders.” Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra Misri has confirmed that India is in talks with US authorities regarding the treatment of these deportees.

India Raises Concerns Over Deportation Process

The Government of India has formally raised concerns with US officials about the conditions and treatment of Indian nationals being deported. Many of these individuals reportedly entered the United States illegally or were found in violation of immigration laws, leading to their deportation orders.

Foreign Secretary Misri emphasized that India is closely monitoring the situation and engaging with the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to ensure that the deportation process follows international human rights standards.

Deportation Flight and Alleged Mistreatment

Reports suggest that a group of Indian nationals was recently deported on a special charter from the US. However, several individuals on  alleged mistreatment and poor conditions during the deportation process. Indian authorities are actively investigating these claims and have requested detailed information from the US government.

India has asked for transparency regarding the treatment of deportees and has demanded a fair and dignified process for Indian nationals facing deportation.

US Immigration Policies and Increasing Deportations

The United States has intensified its immigration enforcement under recent policies aimed at curbing illegal immigration and violations. Over the past few months, the Biden administration has focused on border security, leading to an increase in deportations of undocumented immigrants, including hundreds of Indians.

According to US immigration laws, individuals who violate visa conditions, overstay their permits, or the country illegally are subject to deportation. The “final removal order” is the last legal step before an immigrant is forced to leave the country.

India’s Response to US Immigration Crackdown

Foreign Secretary Misri confirmed that India is working closely with US authorities to ensure that Indian citizens facing deportation receive fair treatment and legal support. He added that India has requested clarity on the status of those being deported and is seeking updates on their legal rights and repatriation process.

The Indian Embassy in Washington D.C. and consulates across the US are also providing assistance to affected individuals and working with immigration lawyers to explore legal options for some deportees.

Challenges Faced by Deportees

Many of the Indian nationals facing deportation have lived in the US for several years, with some having established families and businesses. The abrupt removal orders have left many struggling to relocate back to India, where they may face economic and challenges.

  • Some deportees have reported being detained for long periods before being put on flights back to India.
  • Others claim they did not receive adequate legal representation before their deportation.
  • Several families have been separated, as some individuals were sent back while their relatives remained in the US.

India’s Diplomatic Efforts to Protect its Citizens

The Indian government has reiterated its commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and ensuring that they are treated fairly under international laws. Diplomatic talks between India and the US are ongoing, with efforts to address concerns regarding deportation policies and ensure that the rights of Indian immigrants are upheld.

The deportation of 487 Indian nationals from the US highlights the increasing challenges faced by undocumented immigrants. As immigration laws tighten globally, many Indian nationals seeking better opportunities abroad are facing legal hurdles and deportation risks.

India continues to push for fair treatment and legal recourse for its citizens abroad while also urging the US to adopt a more transparent and humane deportation process. The coming weeks will determine how diplomatic efforts shape US-India cooperation on immigration issues.
